GGIS had the proud privilege to host the CBSE Cluster Boys’ Football Tournament 2017-18 – a first for any school in PCMC! Teams from over 85 CBSE schools (Under 17 and Under 19) from all over Maharashtra and Goa reached GGIS Pimpri on the morning of 12th of October 2017 and the festivities were set in motion. The riot of various school colours became the mainstay in Pimpri over the next few days. Truly, the GGIS premises were alive with lively banter and spirited interactions between teenagers bound by a common love for football.

The teams were quickly herded to the 3 accomodation areas allotted. Catering arrangements for this huge retinue of adrenaline-driven teenagers was supervised carefully by the management and staff of GGIS.



With everything else in place, a silent prayer was sent up to the rain gods and then the matches kicked off. The rain did stay away for the most part, but nothing could have dampened the enthusiasm of the fiercely competitive teams. Every match was fought hard and in the true spirit of competition. Kudos to young energy!!



Some surprises, some whitewashes, some heartbreaking moments and some closely fought matches!! It’s truly amazing how a football match binds the players, referees and the audience into a spell-binding rhapsody!! The Finals were played on 15th of October 2017. The coveted trophy for U-17 was won by Navy Children’s School, Mumbai who beat Army Public School, Dighi (score 4:2) and in the U-19 category, Ryan International School, Sanpada beat St. Joseph’s High School, Panvel (score 3:0)


The Closing Ceremony was ‘kicked off’ with a traditional scintillating dance performance of Namami Gange by the students of GGIS. The Guests of Honour for the event were eminent sports personalities Mr. Bhushan Thakur, Table Tennis Champion and Mr. Abhijit Kunte, Chess Grandmaster. Mr. Kunte, in his speech congratulated the management of GGIS for the smooth conduct of such a prestigious event and applauded the efforts of the GGIS staff. He also emphasised the importance of not being bogged down by failures for sportsmen. Mr. Thakur, in his speech, outlined his mantra of Consistency, Direction, Self-Motivation and Efforts for success in sports.

Before the prize distribution, the contributions of the officials were recognised and applauded. Mr Deepak Mehetre, the CBSE Official and Mr. Ravi Pillai, Head of the Referee Committee were given a memento by Ms. Bharti Bhagwani, the Principal of GGIS, as a token of appreciation for their support. The Guests of Honour presented the the medals and trophies to the teams securing the top 3 positions in the tournament. The Best Player trophies were won by Rohit Pandey (Navy Children’s School, Panvel) in the U-17 group and by Siddharth Yewale (Ryan International School, Sanpada) in the U-19 group. The winners were all cheered with firecrackers and loud applause.



Ms. Bharti Bhagwani, the Principal of GGIS, appreciated the spirit and passion of the young boys and exhorted them to carry that same zeal and energy into whatever field they choose in their future. She also thanked the management and staff of GGIS for their unstinted support during the event.

A remarkable end to an outstanding event – and Mr. Shashank, football coach at GGIS remarked, “A truly unforgettable experience of my life!”
